 2018 Preview

Escambia County finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Escambia County finished sixth in Class 4A region one with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Blue Devils have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2010 season and would love to end that streak this year.

The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Escambia County averaged scoring just 12.0 points a game.

The Blue Devils would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, Escambia County has gone a combined 25-58. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 47th in Class 4A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Escambia County has not won much with a record of 67-179. Their 27.0% winning percentage ranks 53rd in Class 4A and 351st in the AHSAA.

The Blue Devils are led by head coach Rico Jackson who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Escambia County. The Blue Devils have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Jackson.

Coach Jackson's overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 37-29 (56.1%). Over the course of his career, Coach Jackson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times and won one region championship.

The Escambia County Blue Devils will play in Class 4A region one during the 2018 season. The Blue Devils have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 76-45 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 4A and 19th in the AHSAA. Escambia County will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season.

Region one will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season.

The Blue Devils enter the 2018 season in the middle of a 7 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Blue Devils will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one.

Unfortunately, Escambia County plays in a region with the likes of Andalusia, Clarke County, Hillcrest Evergreen and UMS-Wright making it more difficult to claim one of the four playoff spots. The Blue Devils will need to find a way to upset one of those teams and win another three region games to have any chance at the post season.

The Blue Devils open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Wilcox Central on Friday, August 31 at Wilcox Central Jaguars Athletic Complex. Last year the Wilcox Central Jaguars finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in seventh place in Class 5A region one.

Escambia County and Wilcox Central have met a total of 13 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 10-3-0 record against the Jaguars. They last met in 2017 with Escambia County winning by a score of 8-0.

Escambia County returns 4A All-State  defensive lineman DeAndre Freeman. He was named to the first team last season.
